June 12. Dawson City to Whitehorse drive

We had the morning to walk around Dawson City.  This town is a gem in the Yukon.  It is largely preserved in terms of the old buildings and Front Street is great with anything one could want as a tourist.  The hotels are great looking from the outside and there is a lovely Native Museum in a modern building.  The Yukon River runs along the town.  There were tourists around but it was not crowded.  It is a stunning little tourist town and one could spend two or three days here,  There is a boat tour, various museums to visit and the outdoor patios are nice.  I found out later that there is evening entertainment.  Plus there is the everlasting sunshine for 24 hours.   The sun is always out at this time of year.

This is a paddle boat steamer that is permanently installed on Front Street.

Here is an old cabin also on Front Street.

Below photo.  This was the view from the Inn we stayed in.  Even the residential streets have the old houses preserved and painted in bright colours.

This is a very old church that has been preserved as a sample of the mistakes made when building on permafrost.  No pilings were used to build this church and this is the result.   The building is not used but is preserved.

A visit in the winter months would be great to see the Northern Lights.  The town has a nice vibe to it.  The place that I had wanted to visit but I did not have the time to get to was the Robert Service Cabin.

We only stayed one evening and the night and the next morning in Dawson City.  Like any birding tour, we continued to move on.  We were on the road by 11 am.  We arrived outside Whitehorse around 5 pm.

We had several stops for birds but did not see too much that was new.  Our picnic lunch was really pleasant with sunshine and warmth.  We had some rain and the weather seemed to change every 5
minutes as usual.

We had a great supper at Earl’s in Whitehorse, but really did not see central Whitehorse we are staying about 25 minutes away from Whitehorse.

We are in cabins tonight which are really lovely and very tidy.   We are here for three nights.
